Life moments: the art of noticing
I picked out these flowers for you. Do you like them. Are they the right colour. Maybe I got it wrong. What if they don’t bloom well.
I love them. Thank you. They’re perfect.
Flowers can be perfect?
You thought of me. That’s what is perfect.
Thank you.
It’s ok. I need to put them in water now though.
Of course.
So they bloom well.
Of course.
I picked out these flowers for you because I thought you’d like them. They reminded me of you. Small things like this always remind me of you. I see things and think of you. I also listened to what you said you wanted for your birthday and wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget. It isn’t your birthday for another 7 months.
These are what I call ‘life moments’. And, I think it’s these small moments of noticing that ignorantly makes me think I know what the meaning of life is.
Buying someone a bunch of flowers you chose especially because you knew they would like them. Golden hour as the sun shines through the car window. A funny conversation on a podcast whilst you ride the train, heading home. Laughter with your friends that comes from the depths of your belly. Summer evenings. A family laughing as a newborn giggles. Strangers sharing compliments. My rambling voice notes to when I experience a life moment.
I think about life moments frequently and how there is an unequivocal feeling of warmth that ripples throughout your body, often unexpected and sometimes fleeting. A blink and you miss it moment.
